Once your there your ready to start, go to the eastern gate of the village and you should be approached by the guard who will ask you if you have seen a dog on the road. This dialogue will prompt a miscellaneous quest called "Talk to Jed" (I may be mistaken about his name).
Speak to Jed, he is located inside the village of Falkreath. He will tell you that he saw a dog on the road and he wants it as a pet! he will give you some meat and asks you to bring the dog to him. head outside the eastern gate and take a right on the road and you will be approached by a friendly mutt named Barbas! There is a surprise here and I will not ruin it for you, but suffice to say he's a bit yappy ;D
Barbas will take you on a quest and you will have to follow him. In order to keep Barbas complete the first stage of the quest by following Barbas to his old owner, during your dialogue with him select the speech option "I wish for you to be reunited with Barbas" his owner will consider it then will give you a quest to find an axe for him. Accept and Barbas will follow you on this quest. As long as you never finish the quest you get to keep Barbas!
And there you have it a lovely little pet to call your own! I hope it works out for all of you :D

ReplyDeleteThere's actually a dog you can buy outside of Markarth, near the stables. It follows you around, looks adorable, and I assume it fights, as the purveyor says that it is a war dog.

ReplyDeleteYou can buy a dog at Markarth, but it can die. Getting Barbas is better because you'll have a dog for the whole game that can't die permanently because technically, he's a quest item. Or you can do both and have two dogs with you.

ReplyDeleteThere's also a dog you can recruit at a place called Meeker's house, outside of solitude. His owner is dead in his bead, and you can ask if the dog would liek to come with you instead. Free dog! And yes, he'll fight for you. I picked him up while working on Barbas' quest..so I've got 2 mangy mutts following me.

ReplyDeleteI took this dog with me to fight Krosis at Shearpoint and he kept Krosis busy while I hacked away with a war axe. I had no idea the dog couldn't die at the time.

I feel retarded.. I can't find tge guard to start this quest !! None of them talk to me.. Do I have to be a certain level?
ReplyDeleteif you can't talk to the guard for the quest, you can go talk directly to either the dog ( on the road ) or the man at the forge.

ReplyDeleteI was doing the companion quest and all the sudden i seen a dog at first i thought it was a wolf so i got of my horse and then noticed it was a dog when it ran up to me and didnt do anything. So i went on and the dog kept following me and it was an awesome stray dog. I did the whole quest with him until i got to the boss then the dog was shouted to death. :( I used to love dogs.. Until i took an arrow to the knee....

ReplyDeleteI have found some dog named Meeko and there was no quest. I took it with me, but it died :( I wonder if i can bring it back. It was in a house in the forest, i found it on my way to Solitude..
ReplyDeleteMeeko didn't die, foes can't kill him. So that means YOU DID! It's the only way you can kill him, and from what I can see, he doesn't come back. That's why you need about 5 save states.

ReplyDeleteGetting Barbos then meeko first makes meeko and the war dog always spawn. Getting Barbos then the war dog makes Meeko less likley to spawn. The games way of making you less O.P.

ReplyDeleteI ended up with Meeko following me, and I own a house in Whiterun so I just led him into my house and told him to wait here. He will just stay there forever I guess. So technically i have a pet dog now. :)
ReplyDeleteYour companion can also kill Meeko. The dog was being controlled by an enemy and was attacking me and my companion killed him :( and the dog that you can buy from markarth won't stay in your house forever. I did that and he eventually went back to the stables and you have to buy him again if you want him back. Or just take him out every once in a while.

DeleteI hate to break it to you, but a comma before a conjunction connecting independent clauses is proper usage. Comma rules are simple on paper but easily confused in practice. (See what I did there?)
ReplyDeleteOn topic: Is there no surefire way to get a permanent dog companion without keeping the Barbas quest open? These comments make it sound like the dogs are even easier to lose than your regular followers.
I think its not the same for everyone. I had to talk to the smithy, Lod. He gave me the assignment to go find the dog.

I decide to look up some stuff for my game, look down at the comments, and i'm reading them..(obviously) and my teacher walks up and yells at me, and it like "that has nothing to do with what we're going over! get off that! blah! BLAH! BBLLAAHH!!" and i read the comment about comments outloud (to be a smartass) and got sent home... hahaha story of my life.

ReplyDeletethere is also an easier way to get a pet dog just go to the stables in Markarth and talk to Banning who works at there and he will give you a dog for 500 gold. not much if your rich but if you tell the dog to wait for too long he will go back home and you have to buy him again.

I really want Barbas :((

ReplyDeletemy sister found a stray dog which follows the player but then she was killed by Krosis and a dragon and when she reloaded some stupid 'frightened woman' spawned instead.
ReplyDeleteI walk about with 2 free dogs, Meeko and Barbas. Meeko's owner is dead, I found him in the street as I galloped by, followed him to his shack, saw his dead owner and asked him to follow me.
ReplyDeleteBarbas is the dog you find on the street outside of Falkraeth when Lod asks you to find his dog. Barbas will ask you to make amends between him and some god in a statue so just follow him up to the cave, kill the enemies then activate the statue and instead of solving the disagreement right away just choose one of the other options to make the quest continue. After that Barbas will follow you indefenately wile you don't complete that quest.
LUCKY coincidence: Barbas is a quest item so he's invincible. I now use him to kill most of my larger enemies! I simply ask Meeko to wait a far distance away, then take out my bow and have Barbas scout ahead wile me and my companion shoot arrows from a distance. Flawless techniche till now!
Strange, I found a random free dog that looks just like Barbas. I decided to finish the mission after I read the comment about Barbas detecting u while sneaking. So I fast traveled to Pinemoon Cove and as I traveled to the Axe location I clicked Barbus and asked him to "stop following me". This option never worked b4 and this time was no different so I turned back around to continue my journey ... and a stray dog, who lookes just like Barbus strolled by. I talked to him but the only options were "wait here" or "go home". I said "wait here" then clicked again and there was an option to follow me. now I have a random stray dog and Barbus. I dont know of it was a glitch or not but I'm temped to pick up the other two n have my own pack hehe

ReplyDeleteI found Barbas and accepted his task, then I returned to Lod to get my reward. Barbas then took off and is gone for good now. Where do I get him back and how do I keep him as a follower?
ReplyDeleteI don't think you can, you're suposed NOT to finish the quest if you whant to keep Barbas. I've already decided I'll keep him till I give up playing as the team just works too perfect with him taking all the heat and me, my husband Marcurio and my anorachs throwing the heavy artillery from behind, LOL!
ReplyDeleteProblem is I had to ask Meeko to stay home in my kitchen cos my husband kept killing him! Don't think Meeko is a house dog though, he disappeared misteriously from my kitchen and have no idea where he whent! If my housecarl made us roastbeef out of him I'm gonna kill her!
