Skyrim - Mage Guide

Here's how to rock Destruction without even caring about your mana bar.
  • Buy the half casting cost perks for Novice through Master as available.
  • Get Dual-Casting and most important, Impact as fast as possible.
  • Choose one (your favorite) branch of Fire/Ice/Shock to follow.
Fire spells do great damage, but the travel time of the bolts is slow enough to make it prone to missing the target if you fight at range. Fireball is great for aoe on multiple targets. Frost is also great on multiple targets but has even slower movement time. This is sometimes handy as enemies who don't move out of it will get hit multiple times and take even more damage. Frost is aces for close quarters combat with multiple foes.
Lightning is my favorite because it will instantly strike your targets at good distance, making it the easiest to snipe with if you like to stay hidden. Even arrows have a flight time - lightning does not. There's no better way to get a dragon's attention than blasting it out of the air with ease. For some reason lightning doesn't break sneak unless the targets are rather close to you - with a good sneak and Muffle, you can snipe with lightning from surprisingly large distances without worrying about the targets finding you.
Now for the unlimited mana...
  • Find an item that 'reduces the mana cost of destruction spells.'
  • Disenchant to learn the "Fortify destruction" spell.
  • Get your enchanting skill up into the 40+ range.
  • Get enchanting perks that make it 20/40/60/80/100 more effective.
  • Get the 'insightful' 'corpus' and 'extra effect' perks as you can.
  • Get your hands on 3 Grand soul gems with Grand souls.
  • Get your hands on a ring, necklace, and circlet you like.
  • Apply the 'fortify destruction' enchant to all three, and equip them.
You'll want to recreate these items every so often as your enchanting improves, since they will give greater benefits each time. By the time you have all three of these items at 20%+ reductions in destruction spellcasting, you'll be able to sling Adept spells like freebies and enough Expert spells to kill a dragon while in the air before it even has a chance to hit you. The effects stack. As you approach 100% the size of your mana pool for Master spells doesn't even matter, you can cast them as if they were Novice spells.
Always dual cast after you've gotten Impact. The staggering effect will stun your opponent (even a dragon) long enough for you to cast again - you can effectively chain cast Thunderbolt this way and chew through any opponent at a great distance - giants never even get the chance to close with me at L18.
Once you have the Extra Enchantment you can put two enchants on a single item, and double this up with another school like Restoration, or with Fortify Health enchants (since we know you've been putting most of your point boosts into magicka).
I think once you hit 250 to 300 magicka unbuffed that's enough. Max out enchanting instead of going for huge amounts of magicka, and put those points into health instead so you don't get one-shotted. It doesn't cost you anything to carry around a couple of pounds of enchanted jewelry.
Don't worry about the "mana regeneration" aspect - your mana regenerates like crap in combat even if you have 300%+ mana regeneration. It's all about making the spells cost less and less to cast as you level up. The robes available at the wizard college will give you a boost to mana regen and fortify the school of your choice, just talk to the same person/vendor who would train you in that school.

The investment in Enchanting pays off big time later as well - no matter what abilities you are working on advancing, you can always carry around a pile of near-zero weight jewelry items tailored to whatever you require. Get Azura's star or the black soul gem, put a life stealing enchant on a bow, and you'll have all the grand souls you need.
Combine this limitless soul stream with the jewelry you can make while smithing, the gold/silver ore you mine or buy, and the rare gems you find as you adventure, and you can manufacture mountains of exceptionally expensive enchanted jewelry to sell to vendors (a good way to get rid of the less-than-Grand souls.) Most of the mage vendors at the mage college will buy this enchanted jewelry, giving you what, seven? vendors all right near each other with about a thousand gold each to harvest. You can make mountains of money this way which can then be spent on training.
With all this training money you may worry about leveling up too fast - you won't. Once you hit 25ish the pace slows considerably even with the training. Your big boosts in exp come mostly with the advancement of your highest skills, not the lower ones. All of the trainers I've found won't be able to get you past 75, and they will charge 1500-3000 gold per point from 50 to 75. I think you get the most bang for your buck training from 25 to 50.

Fortify Archery enchantments are wickedly deadly for thieves. You can easily make bows do 100%+ more damage by enchanting a set of jewelry for it, and turn your already-enchanted bow into a one shot soul reaping death machine. If you fancy yourself a thief rather than a mage maxing out archery is just as good as maxing out destruction for this purpose.
I'll be honest, this is the sort of thing that needs to be rebalanced. The cost reductions and various enchantments should all cap at some point, perhaps 10% + 1% per level. That would give you a maximum of 90% at level 80 which is I think where you end up after maxing out all skills. It'll encourage you to buff several stats at a time instead of pushing a single one into exploit territory. Mark it up as a request for Skyrim: Wanderer's Edition. You know it's coming. :)

Skyrim - Massive Tips And Tricks List

I decided to create this one so all of you could post them here for other to see. I will update the OP with each tip posted so people don't have to scroll through the whole thing. Hopefully as we get more tips and tricks in here I can put them in different categories for easier viewing
Here to start us off, some of the tips I saw posted.
  • THE SPRINT BUTTONS ARE: PC=Alt, Xbox=LB, PS3=L2, you can also sprint on a horse
  • SAVE AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE F5 IS THE QUICK SAVE KEY
  • You can rebind all of your keys in the control menu
  • If you give your companion a torch they will use it at night-LINK
  • If you want to keep sprinting don't let your stamina run out fully as it takes a few seconds to starts regenerating
  • If you see oil on the ground there is usually a lamp you can knock on the ground to set the oil on fire
  • READ THIS IF UR PLAYING A MAGE Tons of great stuff on destruction, too long to post them all so just read through this. Thanks evilnight!
  • You can dismount a horse in the water and then mount it again to have regular speed-LINK
  • You can equip a pickaxe and "hit" the ore vein to start mining, likewise you can dualweild them to mine faster
  • Waiting (Press T) will fill up your Magika/Health/Stamina bar instantly
  • Try reading every book you see, the bigger the value of it, the more likely it has a free skill up or a quest inside waiting for you
  • To hide your UI while taking screenshots type in tm in console (~), then type it again to bring it back
  • Sometimes if a dragon is not landing for a long time try moving to more clear surroundings
  • You can take torches off the wall to make the room more dark if you are trying to sneak
  • When attacking with bow from far away press the sneak button to do double damage, even if you are not a sneaky character
  • Most items that you put inside your home will stay there, so you can safely decorate it however you like
  • Using Unrelenting force will stop any enemy casting/channeling
  • Every major city stables has a wagon which you can use to fastravel to other cities you've never been to
  • In most major holds there is a map with little flags on it that you can use to mark new places on your map
  • You can buy a dog form a breeder outside Markath for a small price
  • Your horse can climb up mountains that you couldn't on foot.
  • You can take keys from your companions to have access to their house
  • If the NPCs are asking you about your health ("feeling sick?" or "You feeling alright?") that means you have a disease, use a shrine to cleanse it, or craft a disease curing potion and drink it
  • Don't sell all of your magical weapons since you can disenchant them and level up your enchanting skill that way
  • You can place baskets on peoples head and then steal their stuff without them noticing -LINK
  • You can hotkey your favorite items by opening the favorite menu (Q), highlighting the item and click 1-8 buttons on your keyboard
  • Fire does the most raw damage,Frost and Shock do the same amount of damage, but ice drains stamina and slows the enemy, and Lightning drains magicka.
  • You can revive every living creature except dragons with the Reanimate spells in the Conjuration tree
  • Making Iron daggers and Leather Bracers is a quick way to level up early smithing, use them for enchanting skill ups or sell them to a vendor for speech skill ups
  • When you increase your stamina you also increase your maximum carry capacity by 5
  • By holding the "Use" key you can move items around.
  • When you trade armor to your companions they automatically equip it if its better then what they currently have.
  • Resting in a bed will give you rested status, allowing for bonus XP gain, resting in your own bed (inside your house or one you purchased at the inn) will give you a well rested status allowing for even more bonus XP
  • By wearing Amulet of Mara (which you can buy in Riften for 200g) you have an option to marry people, marriage provides all sorts of benefits for you. For more info on marriage and list of spouses SEE HERE
  • To see locations of quests on your map select them in your journal and hit M
  • To discover new dragon shout words talk to the Argenier the Greybeard leader in the High Hrothgar and he will give you a small side quest and direct you to a new world wall one a time.
  • You can fast travel while over encumbered with a horse
  • If you are completely outmatched against a mage (as in, an enemy that uses ONLY magic), try to get behind cover. If you can stay behind cover long enough while the enemy is shooting at you, their magicka will eventually drain, and you can then use a weapon/spell that drains magicka to finish them off while they sit there, helpless
  • If you are a mage or archer who is outmatched by a melee-only enemy, you can use the terrain to your advantage. If you see a cliff, jump on top of it and your enemy usually won't be able to follow you, giving you precious time to deal damage while avoiding the enemy.
  • If you are playing a mage character, make sure you check out the Mage College in Winterhold. Just be ready for a very challenging quest chain.
  • If you are playing a stealthy character, ask your nearest innkeeper about rumors..
  • Best way to skill up Sneak is preforming sneak attacks
  • Summoned creatures ( through spells or scrolls) are very powerful and can be a great help in some of the tough boss fights, dragon priests come to mind.
  • Saving enchanted weapons and disenchanting them will let you level enchanting extremely fast and make good profit out of it since enchanted items are worth more
  • You can hotkey spells and equipment on the Xbox (and probably the PS3, someone will have to check) by favoriting an item/spell, then holding left or right on the d-pad in the favorites menu with the item/spell you want to hotkey selected. After you close the favorites menu, you will then be able to switch to whatever you hotkeyed by hitting left or right
  • Atronachs are completely immune to spells of their own type, so if you are mainly a fire spell user, the best atronach to use is the fire one, as you can use your spells without needing to worry about damaging your minion.
  • Your companion can carry an unlimited number and weight of stuff, but only if you tell them to pick them up in command mode.
  • Guardian Stones! There are 13 of them across Skyrim. You can have 1 active at a time, but you can change them at will.
The Warrior Stone - Combat skills increase 20% faster.
The Thief Stone - Stealth skills increase 20% faster. The Mage Stone - Magic skills improve 20% faster. The Lover Stone - All skills improve 15% faster. The Apprentice Stone - Recover Magicka twice as fast; twice as vulnerable to magic. The Atronach Stone - 50 extra points of Magicka, 50% Absorb spells, -50% Magicka regen. The Lady Stone - Regenerate Health and Stamina 25% Faster. The Lord Stone - 50 points of damage resistance, 25% magic resistance. The Ritual Stone - Raises all the dead around you to fight for you once per day. The Serpent Stone - Paralyze the target for 5 seconds, and do 25 points of damage once per day. The Shadow Stone - Invisibility for 60 seconds once per day. The Steed Stone - Carry weight +100, no movement penalty from armor. The Tower Stone - Unlock any expert level lock (or lower) once per day.
  • Grelka appears in Riften after joining the thieves guild. She has over 3300 gold and will buy everything you want to sell
  • instead of stealing things directly and risk getting caught, pick them up and move them to a secluded room. Then steal the item, hidden from sight.
  • a good way to level up alteration and rake in some gold coin is by buying/mining iron ore and using the transmute spell to silver and then gold, smelting into bars crafting into jewelry and selling them to vendors
  • If you make a trainer your companion you can train from them and then take all of your gold right back
  • Shooting a fireball directly at a mage with a active ward will render the fireball harmless, but a fireball to the ground close to the mage ignores the ward and does full damage.
  • If you are being attacked by the guards you can yield by sheathing your weapon and they will stop attacking and try to arrest you instead
  • After serving time in jail/paying off the bounty you can go back in side the jail and retrieve your stolen items. They are usually in chests some where, marked as Prisoner Evidence.
  • If enemy preforms a summon while fighting you killing the summoner 1st will automatically kill off the summoned creature
  • Swords swing faster then axes and axes swing faster then maces.
  • Eating an ingredient will only unlock its first effect, to discover more effects you need to start crafting potions
  • You can pickpocket the gold back after you spent it on training
  • Giving gold to a beggar will put a blessing on you that increases your speech skill by 10
  • When you break a pick or turn the lock when it's in the wrong position, the pick will "flick" towards the correct position. Paying attention to that should save a lot of picks.
  • The experience towards speechcraft you gain from trading with merchants is based on the value. However, you only gain experience for that one unit.
  • Dragon claws, have the code to open doors on the back of the item look at it in your inventory by zooming in.

Skyrim - Complete Locations Map Guide

The world of Skyrim is massive. Easily one of the largest open-world games of all-time, if not the largest to date. On top of the sheer size of the world, there are hundreds of dungeons, buildings, hidden areas, and bandit camps (along with plenty of other locations). To say it's overwhelming is a severe understatement.

Skyrim - How to Improve Your Followers (with the Console)

Many of us, despite their flaws, still enjoy using followers. However, the followers have some serious flaws. By now most of you should be aware of the bug where your follower will "level" with you, but their skills, health, stamina, and magicka will not actually increase. Here, the console will be your patch.

Disclaimer: Using the in-game console can make things go wonky and can cause bad juju. Use at your own risk.

There, now that's out of the way.

First, your followers are created at an appropriate level to when you first encounter them. For those of us who use Lydia, for example, that means she will probably be around level 10 (same as you), when you pick her up. As such, her health/stamina/magicka and skills will always be at that "10" level. One "simple" fix for this is to disable her. Be aware this is not inventory safe, so take the things away from her you want to keep.

Tell Lydia, "It's time to part ways." Before she walks away, open the console and click on her. You should see a number appear in quotes at the top of the console. (The number should be 000A2C94). Now, type disable. WITHOUT clicking anywhere else, type enable. Close the console and ask her to follow you again. This will cause her to bump up to your level, and the game will recalculate her skills and attributes according to whatever script they have set for her.

"But I want her to be good using light armor, this gave her a heavy armor skill."

That's correct. However, with the console, you can fix this. You will need three commands to correct this.
getlevel - This will give you the follower's overall level. It is very simple and will return a single number. Very useful for making sure you did the disable/enable trick right.
getavinfo - This will give you the information for a specific skill or actor value (AV). You can use the Actor Value Indices listed here. For example: target Lydia and type, in the console getavinfo heavyarmor. This will return a few numbers (the Current Value is what you're looking for). That is her skill in Heavy Armor.
setav - This will allow you to set the actor values that you found in the list. You can use this on the player, but you will not get the benefit of "leveling up" that skill. However, followers do not level up like players and do not use perks, so you can use it on them just fine. Again, target the follower and type setav heavyarmor to increase their skill in heavy armor, for instance.

With these three commands you can set up any follower (except dogs) to use the skills you want. For example, I wanted Lydia to use light armor and one-handed weapons. I did this at level 35. As such, I boosted her one-handed, block, and light armor skills to the 90s (one-handed is already 94 for her at that level), and lowered her two-handed and heavy armor skills to 15. This (usually) ensures that she will use one-handed weapons even if I give her a two-handed to carry, as the OH now does more damage.

Some other useful commands:
setessential - use this with the BASEID (not clicking in the console) to turn a follower into an essential follower. No more killing Lydia because she ran in front of you at the wrong time. For Lydia, for example, type: setessential 000A2C8E 1. Meeko: setessential 000D95E9 1.
openactorcontainer - Don't like hearing, "I'm sworn to carry your burdens?" Then target the follower and use this command. It will open their inventory without a dialogue choice. Remember to close the console first before doing anything.
moveto player - Is your follower stuck because they can't jump out of the back door of a dungeon? Select them (or find their REFID), and type this. BAM! Now they are next to you.
showinventory - This is important because it can show you hidden items the person is carrying. I used this and removeitem (with the follower selected) to take away Lydia's hunting bow and steel armor. Now she is forced to use the bow I gave her. Be aware that if the follower is ever without an item that replaces their base gear, they will immediately generate a new set. If you remove Lydia's bow, for example, she will immediately get a hunting bow. If you ever leave her without one of any from the shield/gauntlets/boots/armor set, she will generate a whole new set of steel armor (sans helmet).Disclaimer: After having used this method to remove Lydia's iron arrows and hunting bow, she now actually uses up whatever arrows I do give her. No more infinite glass arrows because I gave her one. Also, she doesn't seem to generate a new set of iron arrows on her own, so she will be unable to use Archery if you don't keep her in arrows. You may be able to just leave her iron arrows and continue with the infinite whatever arrows you give her, but I liked being able to take away her ranged ability.

And finally go here for a lot more information on how to use the console in game.

Top 10 Most Pirated Games of 2011

As 2011 comes to an end, we follow up our most pirated movies and TV-shows charts by taking a look at the most pirated games of the year. Crysis 2 comes out on top in the PC games category in 2011. On Xbox 360 Gears of War 3 receives the same honor, while Super Mario Galaxy 2 scoops the title of most pirated Wii game for the second year in a row.
crysis 2In February, more than a month before its scheduled release date, and advance copy of Crysis 2 leaked on the Internet. Crytek and EA were hugely disappointed and feared a piracy fest, but theopposite was true.
Although tens of thousands of people downloaded a copy, the real boom came when the full version was released in March, resulting in nearly 4 million downloads by the end of the year.
This ‘success’ landed Crysis 2 the title of most pirated game of 2011 on the PC platform, beating Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 with 3,650,000 and 3,510,000 downloads respectively. Interestingly enough, the interest among pirates in the Xbox 360 version of Crysis 2 was relatively low and the game didn’t make it into the top 5 there.
On the Xbox 360 the title of most pirated game goes to Gears of War 3. This game was released in September and amassed a total of 890,000 downloads. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 also came in second and third on the Xbox 360.
On the Wii platform ‘Mario’ titles traditionally come out on top, and this year is no exception. Super Mario Galaxy 2, released in 2010, becomes the most pirated Wii game for the second year in a row. With 1,180,000 downloads it comes just in front of Mario Sports Mix, which was pirated 1,090,000 times since February.
As can be seen from the three lists below, PC games are by far the most downloaded titles, with on average more than three times the number of downloads compared to Xbox 360 and Wii releases. Overall, the number of downloads of the top titles in each category is slightly lower than last year. The platforms that are not mentioned, such as the PS3, get considerably less downloads and are excluded for that reason.
The data for these estimated download numbers is collected from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers.
